田たんぼで仕事しごとをしていても「雨あめが降ふる降ふらない」で意地いじを張はり合あい、家いえに帰かえれば「風呂ふろが沸わいた沸わいてない」で意地いじを張はり合あう

いつも口くちげんかをしていたが、村人むらびとたちはそれを微笑びしょうましく見みていた

ある年としの秋祭あきまつりの際さい、豊年万作ほうねんまんさくの祝いわい餅もちが配くばられた

During the autumn festival of one year, a celebration mochi of all year's year was distributed.

最後さいごの一ひとつを取とり合あいとなりどちらも譲ゆずらないため、先さきにしゃべった方かたが負まけで、勝かった方かたが最後さいごの餅もちを食たべるという事ことにした

その時とき、家いえに泥棒どろぼうが入はいり、おもわず「泥棒どろぼうー！」とじいさんが叫さけんでしまった

At that time, a thief entered the house, and the grandfather shouted, Thief!

泥棒どろぼうはあわてて逃にげだしたが、村人むらびとたちに取とり押おさえられてしまった

The thief rushed away, but was seized by the villagers

泥棒どろぼうは「あんな意地いじっぱりで、よくあれで夫婦ふうふでいられるもんだな」と不思議ふしぎがったが、村人むらびとたちは「あれでこの村むらでは一番いちばんの仲良なかよし夫婦ふうふなんだ」と言いいあった

The thief wondered, I can be a couple in that intention, but the villagers said, That's the best friend in this village.

結局けっきょく、最後さいごの餅もちはばあさんのものとなり、その後ごも仲良なかよく意地いじを張はり合あいながら暮くらした

Eventually, the last mochi became a grandmother, and after that I lived with my own willingness to get along well.
