Octopus Eight Choja

昔むかし、兵庫ひょうごのある海辺うみべの村むらに、タコなわ捕とりの親子おやこが住すんでいました

Once upon a time, in a seaside village in Hyogo, there lived a family of octopus rope catchers.

ある時とき、息子むすこも二十一歳にじゅういっさいになったので、金毘羅参こんぴらまいりに行いこうと、タコなわ捕とりのおやじは四国しこくへ向むけて出発しゅっぱつしました

One day, when his son turned 21, the father, an octopus rope catcher, set off for Shikoku to visit Konpira.

金毘羅船こんぴらせんの中なかで知しり合あった大阪おおさかの鴻池こうのいけの長者ちょうじゃと一緒いっしょに、無事金毘羅参ぶじこんぴらまいりをすませ、宿やどの湯ゆにつかっていた時ときの事こと

I was bathing in the hot springs at the inn after successfully visiting Konpira with a man from Osaka’s Konoike whom I met on the Konpira boat.

おやじと長者ちょうじゃさんが、自宅じたくの話はなしをしているうちに、長者ちょうじゃはすっかりおやじの事ことを「大金持おおがねもちの蛸八長者たこはちちょうじゃ」だと勘違かんちがいしてしまいました

While the old man and the chōja were talking about their home, the chōja completely misunderstood the old man to be a ``rich man with a lot of money.’’

そして、長者ちょうじゃの末娘すえむすめをおやじの息子むすこの嫁よめにしてほしい、と申もうし出でました

Then he asked the wealthy man’s youngest daughter to be his father’s son’s wife.

金毘羅こんぴらさんから海辺うみべの家いえに戻もどったおやじは、丸まるに八はちの字じのかかれた旗はたを村中むらなかに掲かかげました

When the father returned from Mr. Konpira to his house on the beach, he raised a flag with a figure eight in a circle around the village.

後日ごじつ、村むらの様子ようすを偵察ていさつにきた鴻池こうのいけの長者ちょうじゃの番頭ばんとうさんは、またまた「村中むらなかが蛸八長者たこはちちょうじゃの持もち物ものだ」と勘違かんちがいしました

Later, the head clerk of Konoike’s chieftain, who came to scout the village, once again misunderstood that the entire village belonged to Takohachicho.

そんなわけでとんとん拍子ひょうしで事ことは進すすみ、とうとう鴻池こうのいけの長者ちょうじゃの末娘すえむすめが嫁とつぐ日ひになりました

Things progressed rapidly, and the day finally arrived when the youngest daughter of Konoike’s wealthy family got married.

千石船せんごくぶねに大判小判おおばんこばん、嫁入よめはいり道具どうぐを沢山積たくさんつんで、一同いちどうで蛸八長者たこはちちょうじゃの住すむ村むらへやってきました

We loaded up a Sengoku-bune with lots of large and small coins and wedding items, and all of us came to the village where the Tako Hachichoja lived.

ところが、いざ家いえに行いってみると、粗末そまつな掘ほっ立たて小屋こやだったもんだから、鴻池こうのいけの長者ちょうじゃは騙だまされたと思おもって腹はらを立たてました

However, when he went to the house, he found that it was a shabby shack, and the head of Konoike became angry, thinking that he had been deceived.

しかし末娘すえむすめは「これも縁えんですから、このまま嫁よめになる」と健気けなげに言いって、その夜よるめでたく婚礼こんれいを行おこないました

However, the youngest daughter cheerfully said, ``This is also a chance, so I’m going to marry her,’’ and the wedding was held that night.

その後ご、おやじの家いえでは末娘すえむすめが持もってきたお金かねで商売しょうばいを始はじめ、やがては千石船せんごくぶねを四八杯よんはちはい（48隻せき）も持もつほどの大長者おおちょうじゃになりました

After that, the father’s family started a business with the money brought by his youngest daughter, and eventually became a wealthy man who owned 48 Sengoku-bune ships.

これで本当ほんとうの「蛸八長者たこはちちょうじゃ」になりましたとさ

Now I’ve become a true octopus eight-choja.
