Botswana’s president threatens to send 20,000 elephants to Germany over export of hunting specimens

Botswana’s President Mokweetsi Masisi has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany over a dispute over the export of game specimens.
「２万頭のゾウをドイツのために

This is not a joke.”
President Masisi told the German tabloid Bild.

Earlier this year, Germany’s Environment Ministry announced a policy to strictly control the import of game specimens due to concerns about poaching.

President Masisi took aim at German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, who suggested that the Green Party could learn to coexist with elephants without hunting them.
”It’s easy to sit in Berlin and comment on us in Botswana.
We pay the price for protecting this animal for the sake of the world.
It’s even for Lemke’s party,” he said, urging people to try ”to coexist with this animal if they’re going to tell us to do it.”
マシシ大統領によると、ボツワナのゾウは約１３万頭程度にまで増え、「過密」問題に対応するため、ボツワナはアンゴラに８０００頭、モザンビークに５００頭の提供を申し入れた
According to President Masisi, the number of elephants in Botswana has increased to around 130,000, and in order to deal with the problem of ”overpopulation”, Botswana has offered Angola 8,000 elephants and Mozambique 500 elephants.
Mozambique says it has not yet received any elephants.
「ドイツにもこうした贈り物をしたい」とマシシ大統領は述べ、「いらないとは言わせない」と言い添えた
”I would like to give this kind of gift to Germany,” President Masisi said, adding, ”I won’t let them say I don’t want it.”
