100 potentially new deep-sea creatures discovered off the coast of NZ

Researchers exploring the ocean floor off the coast of New Zealand have discovered about 100 potentially new species.
探索チームは、南島の東に位置する長さ８００キロの「バウンティ・トラフ」に焦点を当てて調査を行った
The exploration team focused on the 800km long Bounty Trough, located in the east of the South Island.
This trough has not been extensively investigated so far.
In February, the exploration team embarked on a three-week voyage aboard New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research’s research vessel Tangaroa.
探索チームは約４８００メートルの深海で約１８００点のサンプルを採取し、魚類やイカ、軟体動物、サンゴなど科学的に新しいと考えられる種を発見した
The exploration team collected approximately 1,800 samples at a depth of approximately 4,800 meters and discovered species considered new to science, including fish, squid, molluscs, and coral.

Dr Daniel Moore said: ``This large body of water off the eastern coast of New Zealand has very few data points.
We don’t know anything.”
Moore is the Expedition Science Manager for the Ocean Census, a group launched in April last year with the goal of identifying 100,000 unknown species over the next 10 years.

Over the next three weeks, a team of scientists will screen the creatures discovered in the deep sea to see if they are new species.
