Thailand’s lower house passes a bill allowing same-sex marriage, the first in Southeast Asia

Thailand’s House of Representatives has passed the first bill in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage.
It is expected to go into effect by the end of the year after deliberation in the Senate.
On the 27th, Thailand’s House of Representatives passed a bill allowing same-sex marriage with 400 of the 415 members in attendance voting in favor.
This bill amends the current definition of marriage, and in addition to expressing ”man” and ”woman” as ”individuals,” it also changes the description of ”couple” to ”partner.”
This means that same-sex couples will also be able to marry and will be granted rights such as inheritance and adoption.
If passed and enacted by the Senate, it is expected to come into effect by the end of the year, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage.
The Thai government also wants to promote itself as a country that is tolerant of sexual minorities and attract tourists from all over the world.
