The water in Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, is decreasing.

滋賀県しがけんのびわ湖こは、日本にっぽんでいちばん大おおきな湖みずうみです

Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture is the largest lake in Japan.

大阪おおさかや京都きょうとなどの水道すいどうの水みずは、この湖みずうみの水みずを使つかっています

Tap water in places like Osaka and Kyoto uses water from this lake.

びわ湖この近ちかくでは、9月がつから雨あめがあまり降ふっていません

Because of this, the water in the lake is gradually decreasing.

このため、湖みずうみの水みずがだんだん少すくなくなっています

The water height is 30 cm lower than usual.

水みずの高たかさはいつもの年としより30cm低ひくくなっています

According to the prefectural government’s investigation, ships are parked lower than usual at the port, making it difficult for people to board or carry cargo.

県けんが調しらべると、港みなとでは船ふねがいつもより低ひくい場所ばしょにとまるため、人ひとが乗のったり荷物にもつを乗のせたりしにくくなっています

There has also been damage caused by ships’ propellers being broken by stones at the bottom of the lake.

船ふねのスクリューが湖みずうみの底そこの石いしで壊こわれる被害ひがいも出でています

If we reduce it even more, the amount of water that can be used in places like Osaka and Kyoto may decrease.

国土交通省こくどこうつうしょうは、びわ湖こから流ながす水みずを少すくなくしています

もっと少すくなくすると、大阪おおさかや京都きょうとなどで使つかうことができる水みずが減へるかもしれません
