British government to return Chagos Islands, where Diego Garcia Island is located, to Mauritius

The British government has announced that it will return to Mauritius the Chagos Islands, home to Diego Garcia Island, a key strategic point in the Indian Ocean that it has owned for more than half a century.
Mauritius gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1968, but three years before that, the Chagos Islands had been separated and became a British colony.
While Mauritius and the international community are calling for the return of the Chagos Islands, the British government announced the return to Mauritius on the 3rd.
The British and American military base on Diego Garcia Island, which served as a base for aircraft sorties during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, will be maintained.
Meanwhile, residents who were forced to relocate due to the construction of the base are expected to be able to return to the Chagos Islands.
In a joint statement, the two governments said, ``This will mark the beginning of a new cooperative relationship on the economy, security, and environment.’’
