Korean Han Kang awarded Nobel Literature Prize for his ``intense poetic prose that confronts human fragility’’

スウェーデン・アカデミーは１０日とおか、今年ことしのノーベル文学賞ぶんがくしょうを韓国かんこくの作家さっかハン・ガンさん（５３）に授与じゅよすると発表はっぴょうした

The Swedish Academy announced on the 10th that this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded to Korean author Han Kang (53).

「過去かこのトラウマに向むき合あい、人間にんげんの命いのちのもろさを浮うき彫ぼりにする強烈きょうれつな詩的散文してきさんぶん」を授賞理由じゅしょうりゆうに挙あげた

The award was given for ``strong poetic prose that confronts past trauma and highlights the fragility of human life.’’

ハンさんは韓国かんこくの雑誌ざっしに一連いちれんの詩しを発表はっぴょうしてキャリアを歩あゆみ出だし、１９９５年ねんには短編集たんへんしゅうで散文さんぶんデビューを果はたした

Han began his career by publishing a series of poems in Korean magazines, and made his prose debut in 1995 with a collection of short stories.

その後ご、より長ながい散文作品さんぶんさくひんの執筆しっぴつも開始かいしした

Later, he began writing longer prose works.

中なかでも特筆とくひつすべきは「菜食主義者さいしょくしゅぎしゃ」で、ハンさんの作品さくひんで最初さいしょに英訳えいやくされたものの一ひとつとなる

Of particular note is ``The Vegetarian’’, which was one of the first of Han’s works to be translated into English.

この小説しょうせつは人間にんげんの残虐性ざんぎゃくせいに関かんする悪夢あくむを見みて以降いこう、より「植物的しょくぶつてき」な人生じんせいを送おくろうとするようになった若わかい女性じょせいの姿すがたを描えがき、２０１６年ねんに英えいブッカー国際賞こくさいしょうを獲得かくとくした

The novel tells the story of a young woman who, after having nightmares about human brutality, decides to live a more vegetative life, and won Britain’s Man Booker International Prize in 2016.

Han is the first Korean writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

１９０１年ねんから１１７回授与かいじゅよされているノーベル文学賞ぶんがくしょうで、女性じょせいの受賞者じゅしょうしゃはわずか１８人目にんめとなる

She is only the 18th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, which has been awarded 117 times since 1901.

賞金しょうきんは１１００万まんスウェーデンクローナ（約やく１億おく５７００万円まんえん）

The prize money is 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 157 million yen)

当初韓国語とうしょかんこくごで執筆しっぴつ、出版しゅっぱんされた「菜食主義者さいしょくしゅぎしゃ」は当時とうじ２８歳さいだったデボラ・スミスさんによって英訳えいやくされた

Originally written and published in Korean, ``The Vegetarian’’ was translated into English by Deborah Smith, who was 28 years old at the time.

自身じしんが認みとめるところによると、スミスさんは「２１歳さいまで外国語がいこくごができず」、翻訳者ほんやくしゃの不足ふそくを理由りゆうに韓国語かんこくごを学うかぶ選択せんたくをしたという

By his own admission, Smith ”didn’t speak a foreign language until he was 21” and chose to learn Korean due to a lack of translators.

スウェーデン・アカデミーは、ハンさんの作品さくひんの「肉体にくたいと魂たま、生者しょうじゃと死者ししゃの関係かんけいに関かんする独自どくじの認識にんしき」を称賛しょうさん

The Swedish Academy praised Han’s work for its ”unique understanding of the relationship between body and soul, the living and the dead.”

「詩的してきで実験的じっけんてきな文体ぶんたい」を通つうじ、ハンさんは「現代げんだいの散文さんぶんの革新者かくしんしゃになった」と指摘してきした

Through his ”poetic and experimental style,” Han has ”become an innovator in modern prose.”
