Namibia, a southern African country hit by the worst drought in the last 100 years, plans to cull more than 700 elephants, zebras, hippos and other animals and distribute their meat to food-starved people.

The country’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism announced on the 26th that 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 60 buffaloes, 50 impalas, 100 blue wildebeests and 300 zebras would be culled.

すでに１５０頭超とうちょうが殺処分やしょぶんされ、約やく５６トンの肉にくが食料しょくりょうが不足ふそくしている人ひとびと々に提供ていきょうされたという

More than 150 animals have already been culled and about 56 tonnes of meat has been donated to people facing food shortages.

According to the ministry, the animals to be culled will be selected from national parks and other areas where there is a ”sustainable population,” and the job will be carried out by professional hunters.

An estimated 1.4 million people, or about half the population, are expected to face severe food shortages.

The ministry explained that water shortages could be alleviated by reducing wildlife populations in areas where the numbers ”exceed available pasture and water.”

The culling is also intended to reduce the harm that elephants can pose to humans.

During droughts, elephants may enter human habitations in search of food and water.

The ministry said 83 elephants in areas identified as prone to increased human-elephant contact would be culled and their meat used for drought relief.

There are over 200,000 elephants living in southern Africa.
