Venice, Italy becomes the first in the world to charge tourists entrance fees to the city to combat overtourism

The Italian tourist city of Venice has started a system to collect entrance fees from tourists entering the city as a measure against overtourism.
Venice, known as the ”City of Water,” has a population of 49,000 people, but it has long struggled with the problem of overtourism, with approximately 20 million tourists visiting from all over the world last year.
Therefore, the city of Venice decided to collect an admission fee from day-trip tourists visiting the city during the peak tourist season, and started collecting admission fees from the 25th.
This is the first time in the world that a local government has collected an admission fee to combat overtourism.
The fee is 5 euros = 840 yen in Japanese yen, and payment is basically made online, but if a violation is found, a fine of more than 10 times will be imposed.
Officials from the City of Venice stated, ``The introduction of an admission fee this year is in the experimental stage, and there is a possibility that the fee may be increased in the future.’’
