Wisconsin student praises middle school student who grabbed the steering wheel after driver lost consciousness

米べいウィスコンシン州しゅうグランデールで、スクールバスを走はしらせながら意識いしきを失うしなった運転手うんてんしゅに代かわり、中学ちゅうがく２年ねんの男子生徒だんしせいとがハンドルを握にぎって同級生どうきゅうせいたちを救すくう出来事できごとがあった

In Grandale, Wisconsin, a second-year junior high school boy took the wheel of a school bus after the driver lost consciousness and saved his classmates.

４月下旬がつげじゅん、グレンヒルズ中学校ちゅうがっこうに通かようエイシー・ホランドさんはいつものように帰かえりのスクールバスに乗車じょうしゃした

In late April, Glen Hills Middle School student Acie Holland boarded the school bus as usual.

運転手うんてんしゅの女性じょせいは普段通ふだんどおりに生徒せいとたちと冗談じょうだんを交かわし、バスを発車はっしゃさせた

The female driver joked with the students as usual, and then the bus departed.

ところがバスの中央付近ちゅうおうふきんの座席ざせきに座すわっていたホランドさんは、運転手うんてんしゅが具合ぐあいが悪わるそうな様子ようすで頭あたまを垂たれていることに気付きづいた

However, Holland, who was sitting in a seat near the center of the bus, noticed that the driver was hanging his head, looking sick.

運転手うんてんしゅがアクセルを踏ふみ続つづけ、いつも曲まがる角かくを曲まがらなかったことから異変いへんを察知さっち

An abnormality was detected when the driver continued to press the accelerator and did not turn at the corner he usually turns.

運転席うんてんせきへ様子ようすを見みに行いったところ、運転手うんてんしゅは意識いしきを失うしなっていた

When I went to the driver’s seat to check on him, I found the driver unconscious.

バスは対向車線たいこうしゃせんにはみ出だしそうになっていた

The bus was about to veer into the oncoming lane.

ホランドさんはとっさに運転手うんてんしゅの足あしをアクセルから外はずしてブレーキを踏ふみ、バスを安全あんぜんに停止ていしさせた

Mr. Holland immediately took the driver’s foot off the accelerator and stepped on the brake, bringing the bus to a safe stop.

「それほど怖こわいとは思おもわなかった、ただバスを止とめようとしていただけ」

”I didn’t think it was that scary, I was just trying to stop the bus.”

ホランドさんはＣＮＮの取材しゅざいにそう振ふり返かえった

Holland recalled in an interview with CNN.

バスを止とめると救急車きゅうきゅうしゃを呼よび、看護助手かんごじょしゅをしている祖母そぼにも電話でんわした

I stopped the bus, called an ambulance, and called my grandmother, who works as a nursing assistant.

バスに乗のっていた１３～１５人にんの生徒せいとたちには家族かぞくに連絡れんらくするよう促うしなした

The 13 to 15 students on the bus were urged to contact their families.

「みんなに感謝かんしゃされた

“Everyone thanked me.

僕ぼくが命いのちを救すくったから」と話はなすホランドさんの将来しょうらいの夢ゆめは、理髪店りはつてんか修理店しゅうりてんを営ととのむことだという

I saved a life.’’ Holland’s dream for the future is to run a barber shop or repair shop.

運転手うんてんしゅは間まもなく意識いしきを取とり戻もどしてバス会社がいしゃに電話でんわをかけ、会社かいしゃから派遣はけんされた別べつの運転手うんてんしゅが生徒せいとたちを無事ぶじに帰宅きたくさせた

The driver soon regained consciousness and called the bus company, who sent another driver to get the students home safely.

学校がっこうによれば、運転手うんてんしゅは急病きゅうびょうを患わずらって治療ちりょうを受うけているという

According to the school, the driver suffered from a sudden illness and is receiving treatment.

ホランドさんは市長しちょうと市議会しぎかいから表彰ひょうしょうされ、グランデール警察けいさつとミルウォーキー消防局しょうぼうきょくもホランドさんの行動こうどうを賞賛しょうさんした

Holland was honored by the Mayor and City Council, and the Grandale Police Department and Milwaukee Fire Department also praised his actions.

ホランドさんは幼おさない頃ころから自動車整備士じどうしゃせいびしの父親ちちおやの手伝てでんいをしていて、車くるまに関かんして多少たしょうの経験けいけんがあった

Mr. Holland had been helping his father, an auto mechanic, since he was a child, so he had some experience with cars.

今回こんかいの経験けいけんを通つうじてさらに自信じしんが強つよまったと話はなしている

He says that this experience has further strengthened his confidence.
