Number of foreigners working in Japan reaches 2 million for the first time

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, there were 2,048,675 foreigners working in Japan in October last year.

The number of foreigners working in Japan has been increasing since 2013, reaching more than 2 million for the first time.

The largest number is Vietnamese, with approximately 518,000 people.
Next were Chinese with approximately 397,000 people and Filipinos with approximately 226,000.
Comparing by residence status, there were many people of Japanese ancestry or married to Japanese people, about 615,000.
There were approximately 595,000 people with specialized skills, such as those working in research, and approximately 412,000 people who were technical trainees.
An expert familiar with the issue of working foreigners says, ``The number of Japanese people is decreasing by more than 800,000 every year.
Attracting workers is a big problem for every industry.”
