On the 13th, the Japan Energy and Metals National Institute of Japan announced that it had completed a test last month to produce gas from a methane hydrate layer in Alaska, which was conducted jointly with the U.S. National Energy Technology Institute.
This time, the gas produced was consumed as fuel for generators, etc.
This is the first time in the world that gas produced from a methane hydrate layer has been used as an energy source.
Methane hydrate is an ice-like substance that is crystallized from methane and water, and is also known as ”burning ice.”It is widely found on the ocean floor in the seas surrounding Japan, and is expected to be a next-generation energy resource.
The Japan Energy and Metals and Minerals Japan Agency plans to analyze the data acquired this time and utilize it in production tests to be conducted in sea areas surrounding Japan and subsequent efforts toward commercialization.
