79 years since the Battle of Okinawa: Pray for peace

More than 200,000 people died in World War II in Okinawa Prefecture.
This is about one in four people in Okinawa Prefecture.
Okinawa Prefecture has designated June 23rd, the day the Japanese military stopped fighting in Okinawa 79 years ago, as Memorial Day.
On the 23rd, families of those who died were praying for peace at Peace Memorial Park in Itoman City, where fierce fighting took place.
In the park, there is a stone monument with the names of those who died in Okinawa written on it.
78歳の女性は、沖縄の戦いで祖父や叔母など30人の家族が亡くなりました
A 78-year-old woman lost 30 family members, including her grandfather and aunt, in the Battle of Okinawa.
The woman said, ``I’ve been hearing war stories from my family.’’
I think we need to tell this story to everyone.”
At the Peace Memorial Hall in Itoman City, butterflies are grown to symbolize peace.
