US to return around 300 antiquities to India

The United States will return 297 historical antiquities stolen or smuggled from India.

こうした美術品びじゅつひんの多おおくは数世紀前すうせいきまえにさかのぼる

Many of these works of art date back centuries.

To commemorate the handover, U.S. President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posed for photos in front of several pieces of art during a recent summit.

The United States and India signed an agreement in July to protect cultural property by discouraging illegal trade and streamline the process for returning stolen art to India.

Most of the art, made from terracotta from eastern India, will be returned ”soon”.

The Indian government announced this in a statement on the 21st.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, ``Prime Minister (Modi) expressed gratitude for President Biden’s support for the return of the artwork.’’

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Mr. Modi also said that these works of art ”are not only part of India’s historical material culture, but also form the inner core of India’s culture and consciousness.” said

彫刻ちょうこくから花瓶かびんまで、これらの美術品びじゅつひんは紀元前きげんぜん２０００年ねんから西暦せいれき１９００年ねんにもわたる時代じだいのもの

From sculptures to vases, these artworks date from 2000 BC to 1900 AD.

Some are made of stone, metal, wood, and ivory.

展示てんじされた美術品びじゅつひんの中なかには、ヒンドゥー教きょうや仏教ぶっきょうの神話しんわに登場とうじょうするアプサラ（天女てんにょ）の像ぞうがある

Among the artworks on display are statues of Apsaras (celestial maidens) who appear in Hindu and Buddhist mythology.

この像ぞうはインド中部ちゅうぶで１０世紀せいきから１１世紀せいきにかけ、砂岩しゃがんから作つくられた

This statue was made from sandstone in central India between the 10th and 11th centuries.

飾かざりのついた被かぶり物ものと、飾かざり房ぼうのついた腰帯こしおびを身みにまとい、インドの古典舞踏こてんぶとうによく見みられる姿勢しせいを取とっている

She wears a decorated headgear and a waist belt with decorative tassels, and assumes a posture often seen in Indian classical dance.

Some stone carvings of a turbaned man, two women and an elephant rider were also on display.
