Shared taxis using AI start in Hakone Town

Demonstration of shared taxis using AI (artificial intelligence) has begun at one of Japan’s leading tourist destinations, where the summer tourist season is in full swing.
A demonstration of a shared transportation service using AI for tourists began on the 1st in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Hakone Town is one of Japan’s leading tourist destinations, visited by approximately 20 million people a year.
Because tourist spots and accommodations are scattered throughout the town, cars and taxis are often used, resulting in chronic traffic congestion and taxi wait times.
When you make a reservation by entering the place you want to get on and where you want to get off, the AI will calculate the optimal route from the desired locations of multiple people and pick you up.
This initiative uses 10-seater vehicles and uses AI to efficiently increase the occupancy rate, thereby reducing the number of vehicles driving in the town and easing congestion.
Kansai Electric Power, which is taking the lead in this project, hopes to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from cars.
The demonstration experiment will run until the end of July next year, and the aim is to improve route design and make the service easier to use.
