Wang Ming-feng, 27, a Chinese national, was arrested on suspicion of violating the Customs Act and other charges. There is a suspicion that he tried to avoid paying consumption tax for about 14 million yen.
Suspect Wang reportedly hid the gold in pieces at the bottoms of eight air compressor-like machines.
The Japan Coast Guard Headquarters has not confirmed whether Wang is the suspect, but the investigation is proceeding as it appears to be an organized crime.
