A photographer’s movie that introduced the problem of Minamata disease to the world was made
熊本県水俣市などで1956年ごろから、近くの海の魚を食べた大勢の人が水俣病になりました
From around 1956 in Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture, many people who ate fish from the nearby sea became Minamata disease.
Minamata disease is a disease in which the hands and feet become numb and the body becomes immobile.
The cause was that the water that the factory dumped into the sea contained mercury.
Eugene Smith, an American photographer, has lived in Minamata since 1971 and has taken pictures of people suffering from illness and demonstrations to factory companies.

The movie ”MINAMATA” with this photographer as the main character has been made.
The film team spoke to the sick and their families to create a 400-page document to familiarize themselves with the Minamata disease problem.
”I want you to know that there are still people around the world who are suffering from problems similar to Minamata disease,” said the director.
