According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan’s population as of January 1st of this year was 124,885,175 people.
Approximately 530,000 fewer people than last year
The only prefectures that increased from last year were Tokyo, Okinawa, and Chiba.

Among Japan’s population, there were 121,561,801 Japanese people.
Approximately 860,000 fewer people than last year
The Japanese population was at its highest in 2009, and has been decreasing for 15 consecutive years since then.

The number of foreigners was 3,323,374, approximately 330,000 more than last year.
The number of foreigners increased in all prefectures.
