The baby was safe and was taken into custody by wildlife authorities.
According to an announcement by the Albuquerque Police Department, a search of a trailer that followed blood stains found a tiger cub weighing about 9 kilograms in a small dog cage.
A bystander was shot in the leg at the convenience store where the police rushed to after receiving a report of the shooting.
Police obtained an animal search warrant for the tiger cub and handed it over to the New Mexico Department of Wildlife and Fish
The tiger is said to be in good health.
The state prohibits the importation or possession of wildlife without a permit, and only zoos can keep tigers with a permit.
In the interim, babies will be entrusted to the state’s ABQ Biopark Zoo.
