Former Iranian dual citizen sentenced to death for ’British spying’

Alireza Akbari, a former high-ranking Iranian official with dual British and Iranian citizenship, was accused of being a British spy in Iran and was sentenced to death.
The Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian judicial authority, reported on the 11th.
According to the Iranian reformist daily Shargu, Mr. Akbari was once Iran’s deputy defense minister and head of the Institute for Strategic Studies.
He was also a member of the military organization responsible for the UN resolution that ended the Iran-Iraq war.
According to the Mizan news agency, Mr. Akbari was arrested and charged with spying for Iran and sentenced to death for spying for the UK.
The British government is calling on Iran to halt executions and release Mr. Akbari
Akbari was a senior official during the reformist Mohammad Khatami government (1997-2005) and was arrested in 2019, according to the BBC.
