India plans to revive extinct ’cheetah’, South Africa offers

South Africa’s Ministry of Environment said in a statement that the donation was aimed at identifying a number of ecological challenges, including the restoration of the cheetah’s role in India, where it was once abundant, and economic problems in local communities.
Under the new agreement, 12 animals will be sent to India every year for the next 8 to 10 years.
South Africa’s neighbor Namibia also transported eight cheetahs to India last year
According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the cheetah’s current habitat is in southern and eastern Africa, including countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania.
They were previously seen in various parts of the Middle East, central India and sub-Saharan Africa, but their populations have been greatly reduced due to shrinking habitats, poaching and conflicts with human societies.
According to WWF, there are currently fewer than 7,000 cheetahs in the wild.
