According to the non-profit Ethereum Foundation, the long-awaited improvement called ”Merge” will reduce Ethereum’s energy consumption by nearly 99.95%.
Until now, Ethereum has been operated under the same ”proof of work” mechanism as Bitcoin.
This method requires high power computers to solve complex puzzles
With this fusion, Ethereum will move to a mechanism called ”Proof of Stake”
Significantly more energy efficient as computers no longer need to compete with each other
