India’s Supreme Court defines marital rape as rape and allows abortion up to 24 weeks

India’s Supreme Court made a groundbreaking decision on the 29th, defining marital rape as rape.
It also recognizes the right of abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy for all women, regardless of whether they are married or not.
These views were issued as part of the interpretation of the 1971 abortion law
Traditionally, abortion rights were granted up to 20 weeks only for married women, women who had been raped, or when the mother’s life was in danger.
Although this ruling has not reached the point where forced sexual acts by her husband are criminalized, she has stated that she approves of abortions.
He said that such cases are considered sexual assaults, and that excluding marital rape from the realm of rape is ``just a legal fiction.’’
Last year, the law was amended to remove the distinction between married and unmarried women under certain circumstances.
