あるところに、とっても貧乏な男がいました。
There was a man who was very poor.
ある時、お金持ちの家に行って言いました。
One day, he went to a rich house and said:
「カッパが釣れる良い場所を見つけました。
"I found a good place to catch kappa.
でも、エサに肉がいります。
But I need meat for bait.
カッパが釣れたらお礼を差し上げますから、肉をもらえませんか？」

お金持ちはカッパなら高く売れるとおもい、
The rich man said that Kappa would bring big profit from selling
肉の固まりを貧乏な男に渡して言いました。
and gave lots of meat to the poor man.
「わしも、カッパを釣るところが見たいなあ」
"Show me where to catch kappa.",
すると、貧乏な男が言いました
Then the poor man said:
「木の後ろに、隠れていて下さいよ。
"Please hide behind the tree.
そして決して、しゃべってはいけません。
and don't say anything even a word.
カッパは人間の声を聞くと、逃げてしまいますから」
Kappa will run away when it hears human voices. "
川に着くと、貧乏な男はお金持ちに気づかれないように、
When arriving at the river, not being noticed by the rich man, the poor man secretly
肉を服の中に隠して
hid the meat in his clothes.
釣り糸には肉の代わりに石をくくりつけて、ドボンと川に投げ込みました。
And instead of meat, he put a stone on the fishing line and threw it into the river.
金持ちは木の後ろから声を出さないように見ていましたが、１時間もすると待ちきれなくなり、
The rich man were silently waiting and watching from the back of the tree, but after an hour, he was really impatient
貧乏な男に声をかけてしまいました。
and said to the poor man:
「・・・まだ、釣れないのか？」
"... can't catch anything yet?"
すると、貧乏な男が言いました。
Then the poor man said:
「ああっ、今カッパがエサに食いついたのに。
"Oh no, Kappa has just eaten the bait
人の声がしたから、肉を取って逃げてしまった。
but because of your voice, it took the meat and ran away.
もう駄目だ」
it's all over now."
そう言うと、
When saying those words,
さっさと釣り竿を片づけて、服の中に肉を入れたまま
he also quickly cleaned up the fishing rod, left the meat in his clothes
家に帰ってしまいました。
and went back home.
