むかしむかし、吉四六さんと言う、とてもとんちの出来る人がいました。
Once upon a time, there was a very smart man called Kicchomu-san.
ある日の事、吉四六さんの村でお寺を建て直す事になり、
One day, every one in the village wanted to rebuild the village's temple,
世話人が寄付を集めに来ました。
so the local officer came to collect donation.
どうだろう、吉四六さん。吉四六さんがう～んと出してくれれば、他のみんなだって負けずに出してくれるはずだ。
"What will you give to me, Kicchomu-san? If you agree and donate for the temple, other people will be willing to donate, too.
だから何とか、よろしく頼みますよ
So, please donate for us." He said.
いいとも。任せてくれ
"Sure. It's my pleasure."
吉四六さんは、世話人の持って来た帳面に、
And Kicchomu-san took the notebook the officer carried with him, wrote down:
杉の木、百本と、書きました。
[Cedar wood, one hundred]
へえっ～！　杉の木を、百本も寄付してくれるのか
"What? One hundred cedars?"
世話人は大喜びで、今度は庄屋さんの家に行きました。
The officer was very happy, then he came to the village headman's house.
何！　あのけちの吉四六さんが、杉の木を百本も寄付するだと！
"What? This stingy man is ready to give that much?"
庄屋さんは、びっくりしながらも、
The headman was very surprised.
庄屋のわしが、吉四六さんより少なくては恥ずかしいな
"I am the village headman, I will not give less!"
と、思い、仕方なく、米、百俵と、書きました。
He thought, and immediately, he wrote [Rice, one hundred bales].
それからも吉四六さんのおかげで、村のみんなはいつもよりたくさんの寄付をする事になりました。
Since then, thanks to Kicchomu-san, everyone in the village promised more generous donations than usual.
さて、いよいよ寄付すると書いた物を、集める日がやって来ました。
Finally, it was time to come and collect donations that people had written.
吉四六が杉の木を百本も寄付すると言うので、大勢の人が車をひいて
Because Kicchomu-san said that he would donate one hundred cedars, a lot of people dragged a carriage vehicle
吉四六さんの家へやって来ました。
and went to his house.
吉四六さん、この度は杉の木、百本もの寄付をありがとうございます。
"Kicchomu-san, thank you very much for having donated one hundred cedars.
それで杉の木を取りに来たんだが、ここには無いようだな。
We came to collect cedars, but we don't see the cedar wood.
吉四六さん、どこへ取りに行ったらいいんだい？
where must we go to collect it?"
すると、吉四六さんは、
And, Kicchomu-san said
いやいや、どこへも行かんでいい。今ここで渡すからと、言って、
"No, you don't have to go anywhere. They are right here, I'll give them to you."
杉の木のおはしを百本渡したそうです。
And saying that, he passed them a hundred of fine chopsticks. All made of cedar wood.
