むかしむかし、
Once upon a time,
一休さんと言う、とんちで評判の小僧さんがいました。むかしむかし
there was a little monk named Ikkyu.
一休さんのお寺の竹やぶの隣にはお屋敷があり、
Next to the temple's bamboo grove, there was a big house,
最近、お侍が引っ越してきました。
and a samurai moved in recently.
ある日の事、
One day,
一休さんが庭そうじをしていると、隣の侍が竹の子の皮をザルに入れてきて、こう言ったのです。
while Ikkyu was sweeping the garden, the samurai came to the temple with a basketful of bamboo shoot sheaths. He said.
「こやつらは、わしの屋敷にあいさつもなしに生えてきよった。
"These bamboo shoots came out in my residence without saluting.
武士の屋敷に勝手に入るとは、まこと無礼な奴。
They are so impolite that they enter and grow in samurai's palace without permission.
よってこのわしが、刀にかけてやった。
Therefore, I cut them down by my own sword.
無礼者の体は、このわしがとむらってやる。
I'll mourned for the bodies of these insolent fellows,
だから残った着物は、お前のところに返してやろう」
so I come here to return their clotes for you."
それを聞いて一休さんは、腹を立てました。
Hearing that, Ikkyu was very angry.
お寺の竹の子をひとりじめして、いらない皮だけ持って来るなんて！
"How dare he kept the bamboo shoots for himself and brought here only sheaths like that!
ようし、みていろ
Well, just wait and see." Ikkyu thought.
一休さんがお侍の屋敷に行くと、ちょうど竹の子がゆであがるところでした。
When Ikkyu came to visit samurai's residence, the bamboo shoots were just about to be boiled up.
一休さんは、ぺこりと頭を下げて、侍のところへ行くと言いました。
Ikkyu made a bowl to the samurai and told him.
「お侍さま。
"Mister.
たとえ竹の子であっても、命ある物はお経をあげてとむらってやらねばなりません。
Even though they are just bamboo shoots, we should recite a sutra to mourn for them.
ですから、この竹の子の体を、お寺に持って帰りますね」
So, I come to bring these bodies back to the temple."
「なぬっ？」
"What did you say?" The samurai asked.
「それともお侍さまが、竹の子の為にお経をあげてくださいますか？」
"Oh, so Mister, will you recite a sutra for them?"
「いや、それは・・・」
"No, I can't..."
お侍はお経の言葉を知らないので、仕方なく
The samurai didn't know anything about sutra, so he had no way
ゆであがった竹の子を一休さんに差し出して言いました。
but to return them back.
「わかった。
"I see.
持って帰るがよい。
You can bring them back.
そうか、お前があの一休だな」
Oh I know it, you're Ikkyu." He said.
こうしてゆでた竹の子を手に入れた一休さんは、お寺で簡単なお経をあげると、
Then, Ikkyu brought the boiled up bamboo shoots back to the temple, recited a simple sutra
あとはみんなでおいしく食べたのでした。
and enjoyed eating them with other monks.
