Grand Canyon ’derogatory’ area name changed to respect Native Americans

The name ”Indian Garden” of an area in the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, USA was changed because it was considered insulting to indigenous people.
This area is in the middle of the ”Bright Angel Trail” hiking course in the park
The new name is ”Havasupai Gardens”
Named after the Havasupai, an indigenous people who once lived here for generations
The tribe was forced to relocate in 1926 prior to its designation as a national park.
This month coincides with Native American Heritage Month, and work has already begun to replace signs and signage locally.
A dedication ceremony will be held next spring.
In North America, last year, California’s Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows ski resort changed its name to Palisades Tahoe to correct the discriminatory term ”Squaw” for indigenous women. was
