Forest fires are occurring at a record pace in the tropical rain forests of the Amazon, and there are increasing calls from the international community for measures such as President Emmanuel Macron of France, the G7 presidency, making it one of the important agenda items.
Pope Francis also said at a mass in Vatican on the 25th, in front of thousands of people, ”We are all worried about the massive fire that is spreading in Amazon.
Let’s pray that the fire will go away soon. ”
He called for efforts to solve the problem, saying that ”this forest is the lungs of the earth and is indispensable” because the forests of the Amazon produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide.
Brazil, with more than two-thirds of the Amazon rainforest, is the largest Catholic country in the world, with some gathering to hear the Pope with the Brazilian flag.
