Yakushiji Temple in Nara City Celebrating the completion of repairs to the East Pagoda
奈良市にある薬師寺の東塔という建物は、1300年ぐらい前からあって国宝になっています
The building called the East Pagoda of Yakushiji Temple in Nara City has been around for about 1,300 years and has been designated as a National Treasure.
It’s been about 110 years since the last big repair, and since 2009 we’ve been repairing the East Pagoda.
この修理が終わったことをお祝いする式がありました
There was a ceremony to celebrate the completion of this repair.
The ceremony was scheduled to take place in 2020, but could not be held due to the novel coronavirus.
式では最初に、いつもは閉まっている東塔の扉をお寺の人が特別に開けました
At the beginning of the ceremony, temple staff specially opened the door of the East Pagoda, which is normally closed.
About 2,000 people gathered to celebrate while chanting sutras.
A monk from Yakushiji said, ``So far, many people have come to visit the East Pagoda.
I think it’s important to continue conveying the feelings of the Toto and many people to the future.”
