Vienna’s 290 million yen ”ugly” fountain draws criticism

A fountain commemorating 150 years since the establishment of the modern water supply system was recently unveiled in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
However, it has been criticized for being ”ugly” and expensive to produce.

The fountain, which cost 1.8 million euros (approximately 290 million yen) to install, was ordered by the city of Vienna, whose mayor is Michael Ludwig, a member of the left-wing Social Democratic Party.
President Alexander Van der Bellen attended the inauguration ceremony on the 24th of last month.

The leader of the right-wing Freedom Party accused the Social Democrats of tarnishing Vienna’s image by building an ”extravagant fountain” with a ”statue of an ugly person” on it.
He claimed it showed how the Social Democratic Party ”doesn’t understand citizens at all”.
