Seven years after Mt. Ontake eruption, bereaved families call for ``safe climbing’’

Today marks seven years since the eruption of Mt. Ontake, which killed 58 people and left five missing, and the families of the victims and others have called for safe climbing.
The Yamabiko Association, which is made up of the bereaved families of those affected by the eruption, handed out keychains at the Tanohara trailhead in Otaki Village, Nagano Prefecture, and called for safe mountain climbing.
200 keychains were prepared, with photos of Mt. Ontake, appealing to the need to gather information and be fully equipped before climbing, and encouraging people to wear helmets.
Afterwards, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 11:50 a.m. in the park at the foot of the mountain to mourn the victims.
