As issues surrounding truth and facts continue to dominate the conversation, online English dictionary Merriam-Webster has chosen ”authentic” as its word of the year.

The dictionary explains that the reason it’s so frequently searched is because it has multiple meanings, including ”not a lie or imitation” and ”true to one’s own individuality, spirit, and character.”

Celebrities like Laney Wilson, Sam Smith and Taylor Swift also like to use the term.
In both cases, statements about pursuing one’s ”authentic voice” and ”authentic self” became a hot topic this year.
