昔むかし、徳島とくしまの井川いかわに貧乏びんぼうな男おとこが住すんでおった

Once upon a time, there lived a poor man in Igawa, Tokushima.

男おとこの名前なまえは福造ふくぞうと言いって、毎日石臼まいにちいしうすで粉こなを挽ひき、わずかばかりの手間賃てまちんを貰もらって暮くらしておった

The man’s name was Fukuzo, and he lived by grinding flour with a stone mill every day for a small wage.

ある年としの大晦日おおみそかのこと、貧まずしい福造ふくぞうは神様かみさまへの正月しょうがつのお供そなえが準備じゅんびできなかった

One year on New Year’s Eve, poor Fukuzo was unable to prepare the New Year’s offerings to the gods.

そこで考かんがえた末すえ、神棚かみだなを掃除そうじし、石臼いしうすにしめ縄なわをしめてお供そなえしたそうな

After thinking about it, he decided to clean the altar, tie a shimenawa rope around the stone mortar, and make an offering.

「神様かみさま、おらを金持かねもちにして下くだせえ

”God, please make me rich.

そうしたらお供そなえ物ものもたんといたします

Then I will give you an offering.

」と、福造ふくぞうは祈いのった

” Fukuzo prayed.

その夜よる、福造ふくぞうは奇妙きみょうな夢ゆめを見みた

That night, Fukuzo had a strange dream.

夢ゆめの中なかで福造ふくぞうが石臼いしうすを挽ひいておると、金かねの粉こながあとからあとからキラキラと出でてくるのじゃった

In his dream, Fukuzo was grinding a stone mill, and gold powder came out glitteringly.

黄金おうごんの粉こなはとめどなく溢あふれ、大喜おおよろこび……というところで、福造ふくぞうは目めを覚さました

Golden powder overflowed endlessly, and Fukuzo woke up, feeling overjoyed...

次つぎの日ひの朝あさ、庄屋しょうやの使つかいの者ものがやって来きた

The next morning, the headman’s messenger came.

そうして大豆だいずを今日中きょうじゅうに挽ひいてくれと言いって、結構けっこうな額がくの前金まえきんを置おいていった

Then he asked me to grind the soybeans today and left a sizable advance payment.

福造ふくぞうが大急おおいそぎで大豆だいずを挽ひき庄屋屋敷しょうややしきへ届とどけると、庄屋しょうやは急いそがせたお礼れいじゃと、また大金たいきんを支払しはらってくれたそうな

When Fukuzo hurriedly grinded the soybeans and delivered them to the headman’s residence, the headman apparently paid him a large sum of money again as a way of thanking him for the hurry.

その年としは、福造ふくぞうはやる事ことなす事ことすべて上手うまくいき、粉挽こな挽き商売しょうばいは大繁盛だいはんじょう

That year, everything Fukuzo did went well, and his milling business prospered.

あっという間まに街道沿かいどうぞいに小ちいさな店みせを構かまえるまでになり、商あきないはどんどん大おおきくなっていった

In no time, they had a small shop along the highway, and their business grew rapidly.

じゃが、金持かねもちになったとたん、福造ふくぞうは神様かみさまのことなどすっかり忘わすれてしもうた

However, as soon as Fukuzo became rich, he completely forgot about God.

その年としの瀬せ、神様かみさまへの正月しょうがつのお供そなえが面倒めんどうになった福造ふくぞうは、神棚かみだなの掃除そうじも米こめや餅等もちなどのお供そなえ物ものもせず、去年きょねんと同おなじように古ふるい石臼いしうすの埃ほこりをはらって簡単かんたんに供そなえるだけにした

At the end of the year, Fukuzou found it difficult to make New Year’s offerings to the gods, so instead of cleaning the altar or making offerings of rice or mochi, he just dusted off the old stone mill and made a simple offering, just like last year.

その晩ばん、福造ふくぞうはまた夢ゆめを見みた

That night, Fukuzo had another dream.

「やめてくれぇ～お願ねがいじゃ、やめてくれぇ！」なんと夢ゆめの中なかで福造ふくみやつこの挽ひく石臼いしうすに小判こばんが次つぎづぎ々と吸すい込こまれ、灰はいになって出でてくるのじゃった

``Please stop it! Please stop it!’’ In the dream, Fukuzo’s stone mill sucked up the small coins one after another, and they came out as ashes.

そうして案あんの定じょう、その年としの福造ふくぞうの商売しょうばいはやることなすこと全すべて上手うまくいかず、たちまちのうちに元もとの貧乏びんぼうな暮くらしに戻もどってしまった

As expected, everything Fukuzo did in his business that year did not go well, and he quickly returned to his old life of poverty.

その時ときになって初はじめて、福造ふくぞうは金持かねもちになったらたんとお供そなえ物ものをしますと神様かみさまに約束やくそくしたのに、何なにもお供そなえしなかったことを思おもい出だした

It was only then that Fukuzo remembered that he had promised God that he would make an offering as soon as he became rich, but he never made any offering.

じゃが、今いまとなっては何なにもかもが手遅ておくれじゃったそうな

But now it seems like it’s all too late
