Ten of those who died were women, six of whom were children, including one pregnant woman.
British and French media reported that the boat was small, less than 7 meters long, and had more than 60 people on board, so the bottom of the boat may have split.
The victims are believed to be primarily from Eritrea in eastern Africa, and sources say that Middle Eastern and Syrian smugglers may be involved.
