New Year’s Udon Eateries in Kagawa Prepared More Than Double the Usual
On New Year’s Eve, in Kagawa, the udon prefecture, instead of the traditonal new year’s soba many people were seen lining up in the morning to eat new year’s udon noodles.
香川県では「長く生きられるように」という願いを込める年越しそばにもう一つ願いを足して、「太く長く生きられるように」と年越しうどんを食べる習慣があります
In Kagawa, they not only hold to the saying ”Here’s to Long Life” when thinking of new year’s soba noodles. They also have the saying, ”Here’s to a long and fat life”.
At one shop located in the center of Takamatsu City, they prepared 3200 portions of noodles,over twice the regular amount, on the 31st for a long line of customers waiting from the morning.

The customers, who placed self orders by machine for Kake Udon and Bukkake Udon with their desired toppings, enthusiastically slurpped up noodles with a strong sense of passion.
For those who wished to enjoy new year’s udon from home, many customers were seen placing takeaway orders as well.
One couple from Nagano and Osaka said respectively, ”I love udon so much that I definitely wanted to bring my girlfriend here” and ”Next year we want to be mindful of our health and have a good relationship.”
One woman from a four person family stated, ”On our way home from Nagano to Ehime, we stopped by Kagawa.
Although we had never heard of new year’s udon, we unexpectedly decided to have some.”
