The British government will formally apply for participation in the TPP by holding a telephone conversation with Japan, which is the presidency of this year’s TPP committee, on Monday after the beginning of the week.
This is the first application for participation in the TPP from members other than the founding members.
Last year, the total amount of trade between the UK and the TPP member countries reached 111.0 billion pounds = about 15.8 trillion yen, and the British government wants to further expand this.
Since the decision to leave the EU, the UK has consistently shown a willingness to participate in the TPP, which has many growth markets.
Applying for the first year of withdrawal has symbolic implications, and Prime Minister Johnson commented, ”It is a statement of willingness to do business with partners around the world and enthusiasm for international free trade.” Masu
