A major IT company has started a demonstration experiment in Tokyo of a payment system that uses face recognition, aiming for use in the retail industry, where labor shortages are becoming more serious.

Users will be able to shop with facial recognition by registering their facial photos in advance on their smartphones and linking them to cashless payment services.
When the user scans the barcode of the product at the cash register and holds his/her face over the facial recognition device, it is automatically compared with the pre-registered face photo, and the payment is completed immediately.
There is no need to take out electronic money, credit cards, etc., and there is no need for a store clerk to serve customers, so it is said to be a countermeasure against labor shortages.
Tomohiko Yoshioka, certification service manager, said, ”Shoppers can easily make payments empty-handed, and stores are expected to improve the turnover rate and reduce the operational burden.
I want to expand to various stores,” he said.
Face recognition technology is being developed by companies such as NEC and Hitachi, and is expected to be put to practical use as a new means of payment, as evidenced by the fact that supermarkets in Fukuoka City are conducting demonstration experiments.
