A brown bear biting a dead whale ashore on the coast was photographed at Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage Site.
Pink salmon, which feeds brown bears from summer to autumn, has seen a dramatic decrease in run-up to the Shiretoko Peninsula due to the effects of climate change in recent years.
Under such circumstances, it seems that there was an unexpected feast.

The brown bear was photographed about 5 km from Cape Shiretoko at the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula to the Sea of Okhotsk, near the mouth of the Poromoi River in Shari Town, Hokkaido.
Taken by Kenji Sakurai (58), a fisherman in Rausu Town, from a brown bear observation cruise ship on September 23.
The carcass of a whale is said to have been ”more than 10 meters long” and is thought to be a type of baleen whale.
