with putting a mic on kimono.

似合うのかなというふうに心配してます

I hope I look OK.

今後ろに映ってるのは私の作品ですいくつか作っているその一つです

What is shown on the back screen is one of my ongoing works.

私は蒔絵という日本の古来の

I've been making my works by using maki-e,

伝統的な技術を使って作品を作ってますが

the Japanese traditional lacquer technique.

この蒔絵という技術は

Over 1,000 years have passed

もう千年以上前から完成して日本独自に発達して

since the technique was established, uniquely in Japan

各時代各時代のデザインを生み出しながら

by creating new design of each era.

もう本当に途絶えることなく

We've succeded in this special technology

日本では現代まで伝わっているという特殊な技術です

until present day without abandoning it.

で単純に蒔絵という一つの技術を紹介したいと思ってますが

I would like you to explain the technology of maki-e.

この蒔絵というのは漆で模様を書いて

Maki-e is a very unique technique to draw a picture

その漆が固まらないうちに、金粉いわゆる金や銀の粉を

with lacquer, and to sprinkle gold or silver powders on it

蒔き付けて模様にしていくとこういう技法ですかなり特殊な絵画表現です

before the lacquer is solidified.

画像でちょっと分かりにくいかと思って

I think the image is not clear, so, today, I brought a tool

今日は現物のその粉を蒔くという道具をちょっと持参しまして

to sprinkle powders to show you how it works.

これをこう指で持ちましてこうはじきながら

Hold it with fingers and flick like this way.

必要な分量を落としてで濃淡をつけて模様していくという技法なんですね

We design the graduation by adjusting the amount of the powders.

これをこうはじくと聞こえますかね（コンコン）

Can you hear the sound of flicking?

こういう千年前もこういう音がしてたと思います

I think it sounded the same 1,000 years ago.

実はこういう蒔絵を使って私が仕事していますが

I am a Maki-e craftsman.

今日はこの蒔絵を使うための

Today I want to talk about lacquer,

「漆」という天然素材のお話をさしていただきたいなというふうに思ってます

a natural material for maki-e.

その前に日本の「漢字」というのをイメージしてみてください

Imagine a kanji character.

こういうものです

This is it.

日本の漢字というのは特に木材を表現するときには

Any kanji characters of trees

必ず木へんが付きます

such as plums, cherries and pines

もう「梅」だろうと「桜」だろうと「松」だろうと

have this 'tree part'.

すべて木へんが付くのが日本の漢字です

That's Japanese character standard.

ところがこの「漆」だけは木へんが付かないんです

But lacquer is an exception.

これはもう多分数多くの漢字がある中で

I think it is the only exception among

木偏の付かない木は漆だけだと思います

many kanji characters of trees．

まずなんとさんずいが付くわけですね

Surprisingly, lacquer is combined with water related part indeed.

更にこの右側のつくりの部分というのが

This right hand side of the kanji

ちょっと漫画にしましたけど

means, as shown by this cartoon,

木に傷をつけて水が出るという意味です

that sap is exhumed from a scratched tree.

なかなか漆という漢字難しいと思うんですけども

The kanji for lacquer is difficult to write.

これは要するに漢字ができた時代から樹木として役に立てるんじゃなくて

The lacquer has not been useful as a tree,

実はこれを樹液を役に立てるという

but as sap producers since the establishment of kanji.

こういう歴史があるこれが漆です

This is the history of lacquer.

多分漆の漢字は書けないという方も

I hope anyone who couldn't write this kanji character,

これで書けるようになったと思います（笑）

can write it now.

さんずいに木に傷をつけたら水が出るもう大丈夫ですよね

(Laughter)

家に帰ってもう一回書いてください（笑）

Water plus sap exhumed from a cut tree. Right?

この漢字漆の液要するに液がどう役立つか

Practice it when you go back home.

こういうものが一番重要になってきますけども

(Laughter)

やはりうるしの幹に傷をつけて出すわけですけども

So it is the most important to know

これは人間でいうと血液と一緒です

how lacquer is used.

私たちのこの皮膚に傷をつけると血が出てかさぶたを作って

Sap exhumed from the urushi tree

そして身を守る

is like human blood.

うるしもやはり傷がつくとそこに樹液が集まって

When we cut this skin, blood bleeds,

空気中の水分やあるいは温度

and scabs develop to protect our body.

こういった反応をして固まって自分の身を守るんです

Similarly, lacquer congregates around the cut of the tree.

私たちはそれが固まる前に

It protects the scar by clotting,

一つずつあのようにへらで掻き取って

in response to the temperature and the moisture in the air.

一へら一へら集めてそれを今使わしてもらってます

We collect the sap

この漆は実は

with a spatula one by one before clotting,

もう固まるとものすごく接着力があって

and we can use it.

金属や陶器もみんなくっつけてしまうぐらい強いです

Actually, lacquer is very adhesive

更にこれが一旦固まると

and is capable to bind

なかなか強い被膜を持ってます

metals, potteries and everything together.

まあ水や熱はもちろんのこと

Moreover, solidified lacquer can be

この漆が塗られたうえに

highly protective coating.

器の中に例えば

Not only it has a resistance to water and heat,

濃塩酸や濃硫酸を入れても

it also holds with perfection

びくともしないぐらい強いんです

even if you pour

みなさん「漆は弱い」っていうイメージがあるんですけど

concentrated hydrochloric or sulfuric acid in the coated cup.

美しくてこんな強いものというのはたぶん

You may think lacquer is weak,

地球上になかなか自然の塗料でもまずないし

but, actually it is beautiful and strong.

人工の塗料を加えてもなかなかない素材だと思ってます

It is unique among natural coating materials on earth

でこういう漆という塗料と私たちの先人の付き合いっていうのは

and also artificial ones.

驚くことなかれもう一万年ぐらいは付き合ってます

Surprisingly, forerunners have used laquer as the coating material

残念ながらこの50年ぐらいの間に

for 10,000 years.

石油製品いわゆるプラスティックの器が私たちの生活の中に氾濫して

However, in the last 50 years,

漆というものから大分遠ざかってしまいました

our lives have been flooded by plastic wares.

漆は高いというイメージ

So we don't use lacquer wares so much.

プラスティックは安い当然安いですけれども

We have an impression that lacquer wares are

本当に先ほど言ったように漆というのは

expensive and plastic wares are cheap.

美しくて本当に肌触りのいい感触の素晴らしい

Ａs I mentioned earlier, the lacquer is

しかも　強い物だ

beautiful, elegant material which has soft touch to the skin.

こういうところをもう一度思い起こしていただければなというふうに思ってます

It is also resistive.

今年の始めぐらいですかね

Please think of such merits again.

実は冒険家の三浦雄一郎さんとお会いする機会がありまして

At the beginning of this year, I had a chance

彼は今80歳という年代で三度目のエベレスト登頂にアタックしている最中です

to see Yuichiro Miura, adventurer.

でこの三浦さんとお話しているときに

He is now 80 years old, and is making his third trial to climb Mt. Everest.

6000メートルベースキャンプを超えた 6000メートルの極寒の地では

In our talk, he said, "In such very frigid area,

漆なんていうのあごめんなさいプラスティックとか

over 6,000 meters high, beyond the base camp,

金属の器だとすぐ冷めてしまって

plastic and metal wares are useless

とても使えないんだ」っていうお話をされて

because food gets cold quickly."

「それだったら

So I replied, "The wooden lacquered wares

木の漆ぬりのお椀を使ったらいつまでも冷めずに暖かく使えるんですよ」

keep it warm for long without cooling foods."

というお話をしたら

Then, he said, "I want to bring it on the next excursion.

「是非それをもって行きたい」っていうお話をされまして

So I made it for him immediately.

もう早速作ることになりまして

Mr. Miura brought it this time.

それを今回持って行っていただきました

I told him that I deliver a speech here,

今日ここでお話しするということを言ったら

and then, I received that picture with his message three days ago,

あの写真をつい三日ほど前に送ってきてくださって

"I am using it like this way at the base camp".

「ベースキャンプでこうやって使ってるよ」って言ってくれました

He will finally climb to the summit next week.

来週からいよいよ本格的に登頂に入るそうです

Once he reaches the summit,

まあ是非登頂に成功したときは

I hope he will share the story.

私たちにもどうなったかっていうお話を期待したいと思ってます

Lacquer is very popular in Europe and America.

漆は実はヨーロッパアメリカにもすごく人気がありまして

Actually we can date it back to the 16th century approximately.

これは実際遡ると 16世紀ぐらいまで遡って

As is well known to us,

皆さんも 16世紀後半に

Christian culture arrived Japan in the late 16th century

キリスト教文化が日本に来たことはよくご存じだと思います

together with guns, wine and castella

そのときに鉄砲が来たり

as is well known to you.

ワインやカステラが来たのも皆さんよく知ってると思うんですけど

But you may not know large amounts of maki-e lacquer wares

それと同時に

were ordered, manufactured, and exported.

逆に日本からこの蒔絵をした漆が大量に注文して作られて

Those have been carefully stored in European churches.

出てったということはほとんどご存じないと思います

Despite the seclusion policy in Edo period,

今でもヨーロッパの教会に行くとこういう器物が大事に保管されてます

lacquer wares were manufactured and exported to Europe.

実際江戸時代に日本は鎖国というのをするんですけど

Since that time, 18th and 19th centuries,

その間も漆はどんどんどんどん作られてヨーロッパに出まして

lacquer has been called "japan".

そのとき 18世紀 19世紀が

Unfortunately, as you know

漆は「ジャパン」と呼ばれるようになったんです

it is now called "lacquer" in English.

でも残念ながら今皆さんご存知のように

I am very disappointed with it.

漆は英語では「ラッカー」と呼ばれて

As I mentioned it before

ものすごく残念ですけど

the wonderfulness and the power of this material can never be described

でも先ほど言ったようにこれだけの

by the expression 'lacquer".

素晴らしい素材と能力を持った漆がラッカーという言葉では

The genre of the craft

絶対通じないというふうに私は思ってます

can be extended slightly.

これはいわゆる工芸という分野も

Similarly, Japanese culture of craft embraces

ちょっと枠が広がりますけど同じで

not only the field of the daily craft but also rare crafts

日本の工芸の文化っていうのは

which are made only once a year or once in a whole life.

毎日作るようないわゆるそのクラフトという分野だけではなくて

The genre of the craft includes such things also.

もっともっと

Japanese crafts may be the objects, which can be used in daily life.

本当に年に一回一生に一回しか作らないような

But, it does not necessarily mean those should be used.

そういったものもすべて工芸のジャンルに入ります

Such object designed for pure art are also part of Japanese crafts.

まして使うスタイルは持ってても一度も使わない

It has such a wide range.

あるいは美術として鑑賞するもの

Ultimately, I can say,

こういったものも全部日本では工芸です

Japanese draw pictures on daily objects such as

それぐらいいわゆる範囲が広いんです

folding screens and fusuma screens.

極端にいうと

So it is the Japanese culture

日本の絵画は屏風ですとか襖ですとか

to decorate daily commodities

日常の生活の中に絵を描くんですね

with art works.

要するに生活の中

I strongly object to equate 'kogei'

日本が日本人が使うそういうものに美術を投入するっていうのが

to the genre of the craft, which is

日本の文化だったんです

purely designed for daily use.

これをやはりもう一度見直して

I do hope you, listeners here now think

やはり工芸を単純に使うだけの分野のクラフトというのを訳すのは難しい

that 'urushi' is not lacquer,

私はそれに関しては疑問をもっています

and that 'kogei' is not craft.

要するにこの話を聞いていただいた皆さんには是非

I hope foreign people will accept them.

漆はラッカーじゃなくてやっぱりそのまま漆

Urushi is a sustainable natural material,

工芸はクラフトではなくてそのまま工芸というふうに

which can be recycled repeatedly

是非海外の方も受け取ってもらえたらなというふうに願ってます

without destroying the environment.

漆は一つ自然のものを大切にしながら

In fact, it is not a short cycle

自然の素材を活かして

like 50 years or 100 years,

そして自然を壊さずにもう一回再生してまで何回でも作れる素材です

but a long cycle of 400 years, 500 years or 1,000 years.

でもそれは 50年とか 100年とか

I brought here this tiny container today.

短いサイクルじゃなくて

Actually it was coated 400 years ago.

400年 500年あるいは1000年という長〜いサイクルの循環型なんです

It looks beautiful as if it was lacquered very recently.

今日ここにこういう小さい器を持ってきました

Urushi can be used for such a very long time.

この器実は400年前に塗られたものです

I think it is not crucial to achieve something

もう本当についこの間塗ったような綺麗な肌をしてます

in our lives, but,

漆はこのぐらい長く使えるんです

the sense of values will be certainly inheritated to the next geneation

一生のうち本当に何か結果を残さなければ意味がないとか

even if it is not recognized now.

そういうことではなくて

That is what we can learn from urushi.

自分たちが考えた価値観を一生のうちにもし全うできなくても

Actually, I sympathized with my father's sense of values on urushi

その価値観は必ず次世代がつなぐんだということが

so, I have chosen this vocation.

漆がそれを教えてくれてます

My sons also identified with

事実私も自分の父親が漆に対するそういった価値観を持って活動してたのに

my sense of value on urushi, and are working as urushi craftsmen.

共感をもって私もこういう仕事を選びました

Make slowly.

私の息子たちも今その

Use slowly.

私の漆に対する価値観に共鳴して漆の分野で活動してくれてます

Hand over to the next generations slowly.

ゆっくり作って

It is the nature of urushi culture.

ゆっくり使って

Please think of this wonderful

ゆっくりと次世代につなげると

natural material again.

こういうことが漆の持つ文化だと思ってます

Finally, I show you this picture of meal in my home.

是非この天然の素晴らしい塗料を

White rice, miso soup and grilled cut salmon.

もう一度見直していただけたらというふうに思ってます

It is a very simple meal,

最後に我が家にこういう食卓の写真を撮って用意しました

but urushi really make us heart-warming.

白いご飯に味噌汁に鮭の切り身です

In fact, white rice get cold quickly

こんな質素な食事でも

if it is served in a bowl soon,

この漆塗りの器で食べれば本当に心が豊かになります

but it is kept warm in an urushi ware.

実は白い温かいご飯は

It is very delicious.

お茶碗で食べるとすぐ冷めてしまいますけど

So please try urushi wares.

漆のお椀で食べると最後の一粒まで温かく

More often you use urushi wares,

本当に美味しく食べられるんです

more beautiful your skin is going to be.

是非試してみてください

Both craftsmen and user will make it better.

漆は使えば使うほどきれいになります

Once again please love and use urushi.

肌が本当に美しくなります
