The sad devil
むかしむかし、一匹のウシを飼っているお百姓が、ウシを牧場へ連れて行きました。
Once upon a time, a farmer was taking his sole cow out to the pasture.
そしてウシが草を食べるのを見ながら、神さまにお祈りをしました。
While the farmer watched his cow grazing on the pasture, he raised his hands and prayed.
「神さま。いつもわしらをお守りくださって、ありがとうございます。
"Dear God. Thank you for always protecting us.
今年もこのウシに、たっぷり草を食べさせてやってくださいまし」
Please let this cow eat plenty of grass this year too."
それを一匹の悪魔が、しげみのかげから聞いていました。
This was overheard by a devil peeping through the bush.
「ふん。人間てやつは、何でもかんでもうまくいくと神さまにお礼を言う。ところがだ、
"Well. it seems that humans are always thankful to God for everything good that happens
悪い事がおきると決まっておれたち悪魔のせいにする。
but when something bad happens, they always decide to blame devils.
くやしいな、おれみたいにいい悪魔もいるっていうのに。
It is such a shame as I really am such a nice devil.
ちくしょうめ、見ていろ！」
Just wait and see！"
それから、三日がたちました。
And, 3 days passed.
お百姓のウシが沼に落ちて、出られなくなっていました。
the farmer's cow had gotten stuck in a swamp and couldn’t get out at all.
それを見るとお百姓は、ひどく怒りました。
Seeing that, the farmer became very angry.
「何て事をしやがる！　また、悪魔のやつのイタズラだな！」
"What is this! Once again, that devil is playing tricks and up to no good!"
悪魔は、しげみのかげからつぶやきました。
The devil mumbled to himself behind the bush.
「ほらな。やっぱり、おれの思っていた通りだ」
"There. Just as I imagined, blaming me for all."
お百姓はウシを引っ張り出すために、手伝いの人を呼びに行きました。
The farmer then went off to find someone to help him pull out the cow.
「よし、いい事をするチャンスだ！」
"Right, now its my chance to do a good turn!"
悪魔はしげみから出てくると、動けなくなったウシを助けてあげました。
The devil came out of the bush, he went over and helped the stuck cow out of the mud.
「へっへっへっ、今度こそ、おれもお礼を言われるだろう」
"Woo hoo, this time I wonder if I will also be thanked for my good deed."
悪魔は、ニコニコ顔です。
Said the devil with a beaming smile.
やがて、お百姓が帰ってきました。
And, the farmer came back.
そしてウシが沼からあがっているのを見ると、お百姓は大喜びで言いました。
When he saw that the cow had come out of the swamp he became overjoyed.
「おおっ、神さま。ウシを引っ張りあげてくださって、ありがとうございます」
"Oh, dear God. Thank you for pulling out my cow."
