The Story of Tanabata.
夜空に輝く天の川の空に天の神様が住んでいます
In the sky of the Milky Way that sparkles in the night sky, lives the God of the Heavens.
天の神様には一人の娘がいて名前を織姫と言います
The God of the Heavens has one daughter, named Orihime.
織姫は機を織って、神様達の着物を作る仕事をしていました
Orihime wove on her loom, and did the work of making kimono for the gods.
さて、織姫が年頃になったので、
Well, as Orihime had become of a marriageable age,
天の神様は娘にお婿さんを迎えてやろうと思いました
the God of the Heavens thought he would welcome a husband for her.
そして、色々探して見つけたのが、
Then, after much searching, the one they found was
天の川の岸で天の牛を飼っている彦星という若者です
a young man named Hikoboshi that herded heavenly cows by the banks of the Milky Way.
この彦星はとてもよく働く立派な若者です
This Hikoboshi was a splendid young man who worked very hard.
そして織姫もとても優しくて美しい娘です
And Orihime was a very kind and beautiful girl as well.
二人は相手を一目見ただけで好きになりました
The two only took a glimpse at each other and fell in love.
二人はすぐに結婚して楽しい生活を送るようになりました
The two married immediately, and began living a delightful life together.
でも、仲が良過ぎるのも困りもので、
But getting along too well was a troubling thing,
二人は仕事を忘れて、遊んでばかりいるようになったのです
for the two forgot about their work, and began to play all the time.
織姫様が機織りをしないのでみんなの着物が古くてボロボロです
Orihime doesn't do her weaving, and so everyone's clothes are torn and tattered.
早く新しい着物を作るように言ってください
Tell her to hurry and make new clothes!
彦星が牛の世話をしないので牛達が病気になってしまいました
Hikoboshi hasn't been taking care of the cows, so they have become sick!
天の神様にみんなが文句を言いに来るようになりました
Everyone began to complain to the God of the Heavens.
天の神様はすっかり怒ってしまい、
The God of the Heavens was thoroughly angered.
二人は天の川の東と西に別れて暮らすがいいと、
He said, "You two will do well to live separately on the east and west of the Milky Way!"
織姫と彦星を別れ別れにしたのです
and made Orihime and Hikoboshi separate.
でも天の神様は織姫があまりにも悲しそうにしているのを見てこう言いました
But the King of the Heavens saw how terribly sad Orihime became, and said this.
娘や、一年に一度だけ
"Oh, daughter. Only once in a year,
七月七日の夜にだけ彦星と会ってもよろしい
only at the night of the seventh day of the seventh month, you may see Hikoboshi."
それから一年に一度会える日だけを楽しみにして
Ever since, looking forward to that only one night of the year when they can meet,
織姫は毎日一生懸命機を織るのです。
Orihime works as hard as she can every day, weaving the loom.
天の川の向こうの彦星も、その日を楽しみに、
Hikoboshi on the other side of the Milky Way too, in anticipation of that day,
天の牛を飼う仕事に精を出しました
exerted himself fully in the work of keeping the heavenly cows.
そして、待ちに待った七月七日の夜、
Then, on the long-awaited night of the seventh of July,
織姫は天の川を渡って彦星の所に会いに行くのです
Orihime crosses the Milky Way to go to Hikoboshi's place to see him.
しかし雨が降ると天の川の水かさが増えるため、
But if the rain falls, as a result of the water volume of the Milky Way increasing,
織姫は川を渡ることができません。
Orihime cannot cross the river.
でも大丈夫
But it's okay.
そんな時はどこからともなくカササギという鳥が飛んできて、
At times like that, birds called magpies appear from nowhere and fly over
天の川に橋を架けてくれるということです。
to build a bridge for them across the Milky Way.
さああなたも夜空を見上げて、二人の再会を祝福してあげてください
Well then, look up at the night sky too and give your blessings to the reunion of the two!
