ある長屋の一行が桜の花が咲きほこる川辺に、
A group of people went to the riverside to see cherry blossoms,
花見見物に出かけました。
which were blooming beautifully near the river.
さて、
After seeing many beautiful sites,
一通りの見物をすませて小腹の空いた一行は、持って来たさくらもちを食べる事にしました。
they were hungry and decided to stop, eat the Sakuramochi they brought.
その一行の中の一人に食い意地の張った男がおりまして、
In that group, there was a man who was so gluttonous
さくらもちに巻いてあるかわ（葉っぱ）ごと食べています。
that he ate the mochi without peeling the cover (the leaf) off.
それを見て、隣に座っていた女房が言いました。
Seeing that, his wife who was sitting next to him, said
「お前さん。それはかわをむいて食べるんだよ」
"Oh, you should peel the leaf off and eat."
すると、その男は、
And, the man said
「おお、そうかい」
"Ah, got it."
と、言って、さくらもちをかわのついたまま、川の方を向いて食べました。
then hold the sakuramochi which was still not peeled, turned to the river and ate it. (In Japanese, [peel off] and [turn to the river] have the same pronunciation, so the man misunderstood)
