The lion and the dolphin
ライオンが海岸を散歩していると、イルカが水から頭を出しているのが見えました。
As the lion was taking a walk on the beach, it saw dolphins appearing in the water.
「やあ、イルカくん。どうだね、ぼくと同盟を結ばないか？」
"Hey, dolphins. How to say, do you form an alliance with me?"
と、ライオンは話しかけました。
Said the Lion.
「何しろ、きみは海の動物の王さまだし、ぼくは陸の動物の王さまだから、
"Why, you are the king of the sea animals, and I am the king of the land animals,
我々が仲良しになって同盟を結ぶのは、実に良い事だと思うのだが」
I think it really is good for us to be close friends and to form an alliance. "
イルカは喜んで、賛成しました。
The dolphin was happy and agreed.
さて、このライオンは、ずっと前から野生のウシと戦争をしていたので、
Then, this lion fought with wild cows for a long time
ある時イルカに応援を頼みました
At one time It asked the dolphin for support
イルカは水から出てライオンの応援をしようと思いましたが、
The dolphin wanted to get out of the water to support the lion,
イルカは海の動物なので、どうしても陸へ出る事が出来ません。
Dolphins are animals of the sea, so they can not go out to land.
「ひどいじゃないか、味方を裏切るなんて」
"It's awful, I'll betray my allies."
と、ライオンはイルカをなじりました。
And the lion scold the dolphins.
するとイルカは、
Then the dolphin said
「ぼくを責めたって駄目だよ。
"It's not good to blame me.
生まれつき海で暮らす様になっているのだから、
Because I was born to live in the sea,
どう頑張っても、陸を歩く事は出来ないのさ」
No matter how hard I try, I can not walk on land. "
「しかし、ぼくと同盟を結んだだろ。
"But you made an alliance with me.
ぼくなら同盟を結んだ味方を裏切ったりしないぞ」
I'm not betraying allies . "
「ああ、そうだね。ならきみは、ぼくたちがクジラと戦争するときは、海に飛込んでくれるんだね」
"Well. You're going to jump into the sea when we war against the whales. right?"
「そっ、それは・・・・・・」
"Oh, that's .....
わたしたちも友だちを作る時は、いざという時にちゃんと力を貸してくれる人を選ばなくてはなりません。
When we make friends, we have to choose the ones who can help us in times of emergency.
