The Princess and the Pea
むかしむかし、ある国に王子さまがいました。
Once upon a time, there was a Prince living in a country.
王子さまも年頃で、そろそろおきさきをむかえたいと思いました。
When he was at marriageable age, he wished to marry a Princess.
けれど王子さまにふさわしいおきさきは、本物の完全なお姫さまでなくてはなりません。
But, she must be a real Pricess.
そこで王子さまは世界中を旅して回り、
Therefore, he travelled all over the world
どこから見ても完全なお姫さまを探しました。
in hope of finding such a lady.
ところがどのお姫さまも、美人でなかったり、
But the Princesses he found were not real ones. Some were not pretty,
品がなかったりして、どうしても王子さまのおめがねにかないません
some had bad character, and he couldn't marry them.
王子さまはガッカリして国へ戻ると、
The Prince was upset, he returned his castle,
すっかり気持ちが沈んでしまいました。
He was very disappointed.
そんなある夜の事、
One night, in a terrible storm
ひどいあらしの中を誰かが訪ねてきました。
some one came to visit his castle.
城の門を開けると、雨にぐっしょりぬれた一人の娘が立っていました。
He opened the gate of the castle, and found a wet girl standing there.
「わたしは王子さまがお探しになっている、本物の姫です」
"I am the real Princess that the Prince is looking for."
娘がそう言うので、その夜は城に泊めてやることにしました。
She said, and she ask for stay in the castle that night.
「本当のお姫さまかどうかは、すぐに分かる事ですよ」
"Well, we will know she is a princess or not."
王子さまのお母さんはそう言うと、娘のベッドにちょっとした工夫をしました。
Prince's mother, the Queen said, and she made a little trick on the girl's bed.
まず一粒のエンドウ豆を置き、
First of all, the Queen put a pea on the bed
その上にしきぶとんを二十枚も重ねて、さらに二十枚の羽根ぶとんをかけた上に娘を寝かせたのです。
Then, she laid twenty mattresses one upon another over a pea, put twenty feather beds over the mattresses, and let the girl sleep on it.
次の朝、
The next morning,
お母さんは娘にベッドの寝心地はどうだったか尋ねました。
she asked the girl how she had slept.
すると娘は、眠そうな目をこすりながら、
The girl rubbed her sleepy eyes,
「せっかくのおもてなしですが、
and answered
寝心地が悪くて少しも眠れませんでしたわ」
"I am so sorry, but I didn't feel comfortable.
と、答えたのです。
I scarcely slept at all."
お母さんは、さらに聞きました。
The Queen wanted to know more, so she asked
「寝心地が悪いと言いましたが、どのように悪かったのですか？」
"You said that you felt uncomfortable, but how bad was it？"
「はい。
"Well.
ベッドの下に、何かが入っていたのではありませんか？
There was something under the bed, wasn't it?
背中に、あざがついてしまいました」
It made my back painful."
お母さんは娘が、本当のお姫さまだと思いました。
The Queen then believed that she was a real Princess.
だって、たった一粒のエンドウ豆であざが出来てしまうなんて、
Because only a real Princess could feel one pea
ふっくらしたベッドでしか寝た事のない人に決まっています。
all the way through twenty mattresses and twenty more feather beds.
こうして王子さまは、やっと本物の完全なお姫さまをおきさきとしてむかえることが出来たのです。
So the Prince made haste to marry her, because he knew he had found a real Princess.
