この言葉の本来の意味、知っていますか？
Do you know the original meaning of this phrase?
意外と知らない人が多いようですよ。
It would appear there are surprisingly many people who don't know.

In a public poll about Japanese during Heisei Years 15 (2003) and 22 (2010),
「雨模様」の意味を聞いたところ、

二回とも、「雨が降りそうな様子」と回答した人より、
both times, compared to people who answered, "signs that rain may be falling",
「小雨が降ったり、止んだりしている様子」と回答した人の方が多いという結果が出ました。

ここで言う「もよい」とは、「催す」の意味です。

「雨を催す」、つまり、「これから降りそうな」という意味で、

ところが、「催す」という意味が忘れられ、
