江戸の後期から明治にかけて内子は木蝋の生産拠点として栄えた。

その繁栄を偲ばせるのが、美しい町並みだ。
What reminds one of that prosperity is the beautiful townscape.
もちろん、今の町並みは復元したもの。

千九百七十年代後半から保存地区の住民と役場の岡田さん達が中心となって進めた。

So, if we really intend to preserve the townscape, the question is how to establish vitality again in the surrounding farming area
そこで始めたのが、村並み保存。
What started from this was the village preservation.
内子の町の周囲に残る水車小屋や屋根付橋などを修理して、山里の景観と環境を保全した。
By repairing the water mills and covered bridges remaining in the area around the town of Uchiko, they preserved the scenery and environment of the mountain village.
更に空き家になっていた農家を改造して宿にし、地元の食材で作った田舎料理を農家のおばちゃん達の手作りで出している。
Furthermore, they rennovated an abandoned farmhouse and made it into an inn, and are dishing out country cooking made with local ingredients by the rural women.
また、野菜などの直販所を作り、農家が農家らしく生きていける道を探っている。
Also, creating a marketplace to sell vegetables and such, they are exploring a path where farmers can live like farmers.
村並みと町並み、その両方の保存を全国に先駆けて始めた内子。
The village and the townscape - Uchiko was the first in the country to start preserving both sides.
その地域作りは今も模索しながら続けられている。
That region-development is being continued, even now while they search for solutions.
