大むかしのある年の暮れの事です。神さまが、動物たちに言いました。

"New Year is coming soon. Let’s gather here together on New Year's Day
そして、先に来た者から十二番目までを、その年の大将としよう
and the first 12 animals will be given their appropriate places in the Zodiac."
ところが、うっかり者のネコは集まる日を忘れたので、友だちのネズミに聞きました。

ところがネコは、ネズミに教えられた通り二日に神さまの所へ行きました。

遅かったね。残念だけど、昨日決まったよ
"It was late. I'm sorry, but I decided yesterday.
と、言うではありませんか。　くやしいのなんの。

ネズミめ、よくも騙したな！
"Rat, you are a tricker!"
怒ったネコは、それからずっと、ネズミを見ると追いかける様になりました。
